Japan Favours Trade in Ivory. (31 October, 1996)

Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto has expressed his support for a request by Southern African countries to lift a ban on ivory trade. Namibian President Sam Nujoma told Mr Hashimoto on Monday that elephants were destroying forests and threatening homes in the region, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.
